KCMC advances to ETV, a modern surgical procedure for Hydrocephalus patients

Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) has officially begun taking a more advanced alternative to shunt placement for Hydrocephalus patients after receiving an ETV Machine. ETV (Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy) is a highly specialized procedure that involves navigating the brain’s fluid-filled spaces in order to create a pathway, a hole for excess fluid that is found trapped in those spaces.

Compared to a shunt, there are no implanted foreign bodies, fewer incisions. This means there is less discomfort, a lower infection rate, and less time spent in the hospital. Experts say that with appropriate patient selection, knowledge of surgical anatomy, and awareness of potential complications, ETV is a safe and effective procedure to treat hydrocephalus that avoids long-term complications that can occur with a shunt.

Child Help International, together with Child-Help Tanzania, donated an ETV machine to Dr. Rabiel’s neurological surgery department at KCMC as an implemen- tation to the organizati- on’s objectives. Child-Help is enthusiastic about technological advancements and hope such an investment can lead to a better future of health services.

During an interview with Moshi FM radio station, Dr Rabiel said; “According to last year’s statistical report, we performed surgery on almost 150 cases of both Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida. This shows that the problem still exists and it is substantial. KCMC has a large coverage including Manyara, Arusha and Tanga…”
