House of Hope

Child Help-International’s vision is to collaborate with partners to reach the worldwide 1 million Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus children born yearly with poor access to health care. Child Help International develops models of affordable access to high-quality care by building and transferring expertise and by funding local initiatives in developing countries. To obtain this, Child Help-International through Child-help Tanzania (CHI representative in Tanzania), empowers local partners and creates Houses of Hope that are knowledge centers. These are transit homes that accommodate children and their caregivers before, during and after treatment of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Houses of Hope are supported by Child Help-International because it fits into its mission: “to improve the quality of life of children with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus in developing countries”. At the Houses of Hope, parents and children are engaged in different activities including day to day house duties, cooking and gardening. The Houses of Hope program includes empowerment activities such as information on the disability, on prevention, on their rights, psychological counselling, income generating activities, Rehabilitation, Continence management training, SHIP Passport program, nutritional and public health training. Houses of Hope function as catalysts between families and other caregivers. They are contributing to better coordination in care.
